What can I say about Halloween? It comes every single year, but every year I’m surprised when it gets here. That is obviously my fault, but what can I say besides, I’m a procrastinator.
Last year I started making his outfit about one hour before we walked out the door. Thank goodness I had a bunch of t-shirts that were about to be turned into rags anyway, or I would’ve been in deep doodoo. My kids are pretty easy to please, they’re boys. I could just wrap them in a sheet and call them blanket monsters and they would be thrilled. I don’t, I’m only mildly lazy, but I have to admit, that is a tempting idea.
Over the years I’ve compiled a list of outfits that I could throw on them with very little effort. Now not all of their outfits were so easy, once for a kindergarten Mardi Gras parade, I fashioned an entire Toothless the dragon outfit that took about 25 hours total to make. It was a thing of beauty. I would love to make another super cool outfit, if only to hear my kids say I’m the best mom ever for one night, but who has time for that? I need more time with my family, not more time alone making a piece of clothing they’re only going to wear once.
5 Easy DIY Halloween Outfits
Try any one of these creative Halloween outfits for your little on this year.
Johnny Appleseed– Use a pot as a hat, put them in a pair of overalls or jeans with a white t-shirt and stick an apple in their hand. Done and done. This one is good for the child that loves to go barefoot. Now the I think of it, it could be changed to a Huckleberry Finn outfit really quick by just tying a bandana sack on a stick and ditching the hat.
Hobo– This was my favorite costume of all time ever. Dirty clothes, gloves with the fingertips cut out and a skull cap start this outfit. For the finishing touch, smear their clothes and little faces with some dirt from the yard and make a cardboard sign. I wrote, “Will work for candy” but any message will work.
Lunar Eclipse– All black, all over. Black shoes, hat, shirt, and pants. Just have your child slowly shuffle sideways in front of other people for dramatic effect. If you have 2 children, the other could be the moon in an all white outfit and your eclipse child could just move in front of them. 2 easy costumes!
Branch Manager– Most people have semi-dressy clothing for their kids just hanging in the closet. Clothe them in business casual attire, hand them a coffee mug and a briefcase. If you have name tag around, use it. If not, don’t worry about it.
Rubik’s Cube– Cut out holes for the arms and head, then paint multi colored squares onto a box. Separate the squares with a line of black tape or paint and the look is complete.
Time and Budget Friendly
None of these looks are complicated and their simplicity means you get more enjoyment out of the holiday instead of stressing over costume details. Most of the items needed to pull off these looks can be found around a typical home. This means, you don’t need to spend extra to have a creative and memorable Halloween. This also means, you can wait until almost the last minute to gather supplies and get the outfit together.
Go out there this year with a handmade costume, your kids respect and admiration, more time with your family and more money in your pockets. Have fun!!!
